God is not silent. In fact He will be speaking to you now as your read this. The question is will you hear Him?
God is Spirit who seeks to connect with us on a spiritual level. We are considered to have three components, our physical body, our soul, and our spirit.
It is commonly thought that our soul is our personality, mind (including our conscious), will and emotions.
At our core is our spirit. It is our centre of control and existence. Our spirit came into existence when God breathed life into us when He created us in the womb. Our spirit is considered to be eternal, and continues to exist after we die. It is the part of our being that God created for Him to dwell in and for us to co-exist with God. It is our spirit that is restless without connection with God. It is our spirit that responds when we put our faith in God.
Seeking, hearing from and finding God involves us becoming aware of God in our conscious mind and ultimately deciding what to do about God – ignore Him, reject Him, listen to Him, or accept Him. God gave us a free will to choose how to respond to God.
God makes Himself known to us in a number of ways. This is considered as God speaking to us, although it is usually not audible. It is often a thought we have or an impression, the content of which is something aligned with the character and person of God and is often some form of truth or revelation that we become aware of. It will often be something that resonates with us in our spirit that we become aware of in our conscious mind.
The most common way for God to speak to us is in a small, quiet, individual, whispered way – an inaudible voice that speaks to our conscious.
At other times, there is more of an urgency in the message delivered to us, sometimes referred to as a conviction that presses on us, bringing us to a point of decision.
There are examples in the Bible where God spoke audibly to people, and God spoke to people through visions and dreams. This can still occur today.
God can use many mechanisms to speak to us.
The Bible is God-breathed. It is His instruction to us. When we read it, God will use it to speak to us. It is relevant to us, it connects with us on a spiritual level. When we read it, our attention will be drawn to certain verses – that is God speaking to us through those verses. When we reflect on what we read, God brings further thoughts and meaning to our conscious mind. Try it for yourself. Take a book like Psalms (or any book of the bible) and start reading it and see what gets your attention.
Creation – the beauty, wonder and intricacy of our natural world reveals God to us.
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. (Romans 1:20)
Spend some time appreciating our natural world and let God speak to you through it.
Worship music, music that humans have written about God, no doubt under God’s guidance, draws our attention to God and often causes a response that involves our body as we sing in agreement with the words, our soul as we are conscious of what we are singing about, and our spirit. Even without singing, worship music connects with us on a spiritual level if we allow it to.
God uses other people to speak to us. His voice may come through the words someone speaks to us. They may be words delivered to an audience, such as a sermon, which God uses to specifically speak to your soul and spirit, or they may be specific words that God uses someone else to verbalise to you, such as words of wisdom, encouragement and through praying for you.
God is certainly not silent. He is reaching out to you all the time. The problem is often we are not listening. We’re not attuned to hear His voice. We ,may not want to hear His voice, we don’t know what it sounds like or we crowd it out with other things or dismiss it.
God is reaching out to you. He wants to talk with you, He wants to have many conversations with you. Jesus says to you:
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. (Revelation 3:20)
A conversation is two way. God invites us to talk to him through prayer and He promises to listen and respond to you.
You will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord (Jeremiah 29:12-14)
Take some time to explore talking to and listening to God speak to you.
