What sign are you looking for that God exists? Be honest…

If you don’t yet know God, you are likely either ignoring God’s existence or you have made a conditional vow to yourself such as “until I see x or experience y God doesn’t exist”.

The people of the time when Jesus lived were looking for God to look like and be a certain way, and as a result many missed seeing and encountering him…the same can be true for us.

God had promised many years previously that He would send a Messiah, someone to lead and redeem the Jewish people. The Jewish people were looking for a king, someone to set up a human kingdom and rule on earth.

They were not expecting Jesus, the Son of God, in human flesh, born as a baby in a manger, with no earthly status, to be the Messiah. God came and dwelt with them, taught them how to live and brought physical and spiritual healing, and many didn’t recognise him.

Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. (John 12:37)

Many people rejected that Jesus could be the Messiah, as he didn’t fit their view of who God was and they didn’t expect him to show up in the way that he did.

Who do you expect God to be? How do you expect him to reveal to you that He is real?

The following is a discourse that is recorded in the Bible, by Paul, when he explained to some people in Rome the truth about God.

Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you. “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.” Acts 17:22-31

If you want to encounter God, be prepared to remove your pre-conceived ideas of God and invite him to reveal himself to you…just ask him and he will.

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7-8)

Waiting for a sign that God is real is a ploy to avoid God. God is present in the earth, our world today. As we saw in the blog post about Hearing God’s Voice, God does speak today to each one of us. He wants to connect with you. He is all loving and wants you to experience his love, mercy and grace. Will you have eyes to see, ears to hear and an open heart to receive him?
