Devotions or quiet times refer to a regular habit of reading and reflecting on the Bible and communicating with God through prayer. They are a time when you meet with God and He meets with you.
It is important to find somewhere quiet and without interruption where you can focus. A devotion may only take a few minutes or it can take longer – it’s up to you.
While having a daily devotion is something to aim for, we are all busy people with other life commitments, so the key is to be as regular as you can in setting this time aside.
The format of the devotion can be anything you want it to be and it doesn’t have to be the same every time. You could have a devotion with God while going for a walk, or it could be something you do before you get out of bed, or maybe in your lunch break or at the end of the day.
It usually consists of:
- Looking to the Bible to see what God is saying in it – you might read the Bible for yourself, listen to or reflect on a sermon, podcast or video post you recently heard, or use a devotional resource that has been produced for this purpose
- Thinking about what you have read or heard means to and for you
- Praying to God in response to what you have read or heard
