I draw my understanding of the existence of God from descriptions in the Bible, God’s written words to mankind.

There is only one God

The first thing to note is that there is only one God as stated in the Bible:

This is what the Lord says – Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God. (Isaiah 44:6)

I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. (Isaiah 45:5)

Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. (Isaiah 46:9)

God is Eternal

God has always existed and will always exist.

Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.(Psalm 90:2)

For this is what the high and exalted One says – he who lives forever, whose name is holy…(Isaiah 57:15)

God is Everywhere and is all Knowing

God sees and knows all things.

Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them?” declares the Lord. “Do not I fill heaven and earth?” declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 23:24)

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.(Psalm 139:7-10)

If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. (1 John 3:20)

God is Three in One

God is uniquely three simultaneous, co-existing persons in one – the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. This is a challenging concept for us to understand.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. (Deuteronomy 6:4)

I and the Father are one (Jesus speaking) (John 10:30)

The following Bible verses describe that each of the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit are God:

FATHER
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:2)

SON
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.  We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:1 and John 1:14)

For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form. (Colossians 2:9)

HOLY SPIRIT
Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?…You have not lied just to human beings but to God. (Acts 5:3-4)

There is one verse in the Bible where the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are referenced together. This is in Matthew 28:19 where Jesus was speaking to his disciples after his resurrection from the dead and commissioning them to continue his work as he was about to leave earth.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

The purpose of this post is to present the basis for belief in the existence of God. Future posts will describe various attributes of God, explaining who He is, what He does and how He interacts with us and why.
